Research

Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship

All fellows must complete a scholarly project as part of their training. The fellowship program director will appoint a chair for each fellow’s Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC). The fellow will work with the SOC chair and fellowship program director to identify the other members of the SOC. The SOC will support and guide the fellow through development and completion of the scholarly project.

Time for research

Dedicated time is provided to the fellow for completion of scholarly activity throughout the three years.

  • Year one: 18%
  • Year two: 25%
  • Year three: 47%

Grant Writing Curriculum

First-year fellows participate in the GME Grant Writing Curriculum consisting of didactic and coaching sessions held over a 6-month period.  Fellows from varied subspecialties are placed in cohorts with faculty mentors for monthly sessions to guide the creation of their first grant application. Once the fellow has completed the course, he or she is eligible to apply for a Children's Mercy Hospital Clinical Fellowship Research Award (up to $15,000).

Quality improvement

Fellows participate in the Improvement Academy – Problem Solving for Fellows during the second training year.  This course is designed to allow fellows to practice an A3 mindset for problem solving. Fellows complete an online, didactic component “Problem Solving Basics” followed by a 7-month Experiential Series during which the fellow receives individualized coaching by a faculty member with expertise in quality improvement. Upon completion of the course, fellows will have learned and demonstrated the ability to identify an area of needed improvement within his/her clinical setting and utilize a variety of tools to solve the identified problem.
