The Tom Keaveny Endowed Fund for Cancer Research was established
in 2003. In September of 2002, Tom Keaveny passed away at the age
of 39 of colon cancer, leaving his wife Mary and four young
children. Tom had a true zest for life that will never be
forgotten.

He served as Treasurer on the Children's Mercy hospital
auxiliary of Hands & Hearts for Children. After his death, the
Board of Hands & Hearts created a pediatric cancer research
fund in his name at the hospital. Proceeds from the event "Celebre
La Vida!" provided the initial donation for the fund. Many generous
donors have continued to support the fund since then. In the spring
of 2008, the first research grant was awarded to a team of
investigators at Children's Mercy Hospital for a very important
research project that could potentially impact children with cancer
not only in the Kansas City area, but also around the world. The
goal of the fund is to be able to award a research grant every year
in many areas of pediatric cancer research.
