How do I apply?
There are more than 900 volunteers at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics; however, we are always in need of more to fill the needs of our patients, families, and staff. Adult Volunteers can follow the link to apply. If you are a college student or high school student, you must attend an informational session before you can apply.
Do you have any programs for high school students?
Yes, we offer year round semester volunteering for high school students ages 15 and older. Most opportunities for high school students are volunteer positions located at the Adele Hall campus, located at 2401 Gillham Road. Please note that our student volunteers provide services that are strictly comforting in nature or provide administrative support to the staff. Direct patient contact volunteer positions for volunteers under the age of 18 and still in high school are focused in outpatient care settings only. Volunteers are not able to shadow nurses, doctors and clinicians, or to take vital signs and observe procedures in their volunteer role.
Do you have any programs for college students going into health care?
We offer semester volunteer programs for college students. Please note that our volunteers provide services that are strictly comforting in nature and are not able to shadow nurses, doctors and clinicians, or to take vital signs and observe procedures in their volunteer role.
Do you offer college internships and shadowing opportunities?
No, the Volunteer Department does not offer either college internships or shadowing opportunities.
What type of training will I receive?
Once accepted as a volunteer, our office will sign you up for New Volunteer Orientation where you will receive valuable information about volunteering in the hospital. Within a few weeks after your orientation, you will be contacted by your volunteer supervisor to set up your volunteer site-specific training.
What do I do about parking?
Volunteers will receive a parking pass at New Volunteer Orientation if they volunteer at the South Campus or Main Campus. At our other locations parking passes are not necessary. Parking passes should be placed on the driver's side dash of your car so Security will see it. Volunteers receive free, preferential parking at all locations.
Are there any short-term volunteer opportunities?
Because of training costs and the ongoing needs of our patients, families and staff, our adult program asks for a minimum of 75 hours, and our student volunteer programs require a 85 or 30 hour commitment depending on the session. Volunteer shifts are a weekly 3 hour commitment in a set schedule and assignment over a period of time.
What type of items does Children's Mercy accept as donations?
Children's Mercy relies heavily on donations from our community. Because of our Infection Control Policy, all items must be new with tags on them or be in the original package.
May I bring in my donations and personally give them to patients?
Because of the privacy laws, you may not personally give your items to our patients. Security and the Volunteer Services Department will accept your donations, and our Child Life Department will distribute them appropriately. Be assured, they are very much appreciated and put to great use.
