Two Children’s Mercy physicians have recently been recognized for their research.
The 2006 recipient of John and Marion Kreamer Research Excellence Award is Denise Dowd, M.D. The award recognizes a Children’s Mercy researcher whose work has had an impact on improving health care for children.
Dr. Dowd is the chief of the section of Injury Prevention and an emergency medicine physicians at Children’s Mercy. She is a professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.
Dr. Dowd has combined her expertise in clinical pediatric emergency medicine with an intense interest in injury prevention. The result is a national collaborative research network. She has applied her research to formulating national public policy while undertaking major social issues that affect child health, such as intimate partner violence. Her work has also focused on issues such as sexual assault in children, handgun injuries, playground safety and adolescent behavior, including dating violence and suicide.
The 2006 recipient of the Paul Henson Award for Pediatric Immunology Research is Lanny Rosenwasser, M.D. The award is presented yearly to a Children’s Mercy researcher to further promising ongoing research in pediatric immunology.
Dr. Rosenwasser is the Dee Lyons/Missouri Endowed Chair in Pediatric Immunology Research at the Children’s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics and University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. He is a Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, and Basic Science and is a world renowned clinician scientist with a focus on cytokines and genetic determinants in asthma.
Asthma is the leading chronic illness of childhood that affects over 6.1 million children in the United States and accounts for over 728,000 emergency room visits. Dr. Rosewasser’s work in the genetics of asthma is critical to the implementation of new strategies in the treatment and future cure of asthma.
