CKD Postcard

Children’s Mercy is proud to be one of the two coordinating centers for this large-scale national study, a testament to the expertise of our patient care and our dedication to research to care for children today and into the future.

What is the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children Study (CKiD)?

The Chronic Kidney Disease in Children Study is an important national research study of children, ages one to 16, who have impaired kidney function.  Participants and their parents or guardians will attend two study visits in the first year and annual visits thereafter, for up to 4 years.  The CKiD study will:

  • provide an accurate measure of the child’s kidney function (glomerular filtration rate, GFR)
  • track the child’s behavior and abilities to learn and think
  • monitor the child’s growth
  • evaluate the child’s heart and blood vessels and discuss risk factors for future heart disease
  • review parents’ concerns about their child’s social, physical and emotional well-being

What will the study provide families?

If children and their families choose to participate, they will:

  • have an accurate measure of the child’s kidney function (GFR)
  • learn more about the child’s health, for example:
    • have age-appropriate testing to understand your child’s learning abilities and development
    • have standardized tests to understand your child’s heart function and growth
    • contribute to information that may help children with chronic kidney disease in the future

Where do we go from here?

  • If CKiD seems right, parents can call us toll free at 1-866-770-CKiD (2543).  We will arrange a clinic visit (at a center close to you, nationwide) to tell you more about CKiD and find out if the child is eligible for the study.
