The Ward Family Center for Congenital Heart Disease at Children’s Mercy Hospital has a long history of performing reconstructive operations for children with cardiac disease. As a consequence, a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team has been assembled, which includes surgeons, pediatric cardiologists, radiologists, intensivists, nurses anesthesiologists, advanced practice nurses, and perfusionists.
Our commitment to our patients is not driven by the calendar or arbitrary age cutoffs, but extends forever. As the population of adolescents and adults with congenital heart conditions grows, we feel the responsibility to dedicate our knowledge base and extensive congenital cardiac resources to expanding our management of complex congenital heart disease to this enlarging and needy population.
Our commitment to congenital cardiac disease, regardless of patient age, is built on a foundation of excellence in cardiology and cardiac surgery that has resulted in 98%-99% survival following neonatal and infant cardiac repairs (100% for many diagnostic entities).
As we expand our role to assist in the health care management of older patients with congenital cardiac disease, we seek to partner with the patient’s regular primary physician, cardiologist, gynecologist, etc. It is not our intent to take over the principal care of these patients, but rather to provide periodic evaluations and recommendations for management planning. Occasionally, this may include diagnostic or therapeutic interventions.
