Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, Kansas City – Why Children’s Mercy for Genetics

  • The Children’s Mercy Hospital laboratories provide a full range of diagnostic services including chromosome analysis, molecular studies and biochemical testing. Our expanded laboratory services allow for the diagnosis of many genetic diseases and determination of genetic status for individuals at risk for specific conditions.

  • Family counseling and education are essential components of a genetic evaluation. Our staff identifies and calculates genetic risks, educates families on patterns of inheritance and discusses available testing.

  • The rare nature of many genetic conditions necessitates active consultations between physicians, laboratories and information sources. To assist our patients and their caregivers, we maintain these vital contacts and we actively use the Internet and other computerized information sources.

  • Our clinic is staffed by board-certified clinical geneticists and genetic counselors with a wide range of expertise. Areas of interest include dysmorphology, cytogenetics, molecular and biochemical genetics.

  • Our clinic is able to facilitate diagnostic testing for infants who have had an abnormal newborn state screen. Testing is provided along with family education about the disorder and nutritional intervention, if needed.  Social Workers and Parent Support Specialists are available during clinic and for phone consultations. These staff members provide educational materials and support group information to families and physicians.
