Children's Mercy Cancer Center and Pediatric Cancer Research
“Cancer” is a frightening word at any time, but never more so than when a parent hears “Your child has cancer.” The Children’s Mercy Cancer Center is the region’s largest and most advanced program providing care for children and teens with all forms of cancer and is a national leader is providing compassionate, cutting-edge treatment for these young patients. Our program offers the expertise of 16 board-certified or board-eligible pediatric oncologists and sees an average of 170 new pediatric oncology diagnoses every year. In 2007, Children’s Mercy was the only children’s hospital in the nation to receive the “Outstanding Achievement Award,” the highest designation given by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.
Children’s Mercy also is a leader in an important international organization called the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), which brings together the expertise and knowledge of pediatric oncologists throughout the U.S. and Canada. Through our membership in this group, our physicians have access to all the latest research in pediatric oncology being done nationwide, including participation in more than 100 clinical trials. But providing the latest treatment is not enough; Children’s Mercy’s goal is to go beyond current knowledge to enhancing our capabilities to create new and better treatments for all children with cancer. Your support of Red Hot Night 2010 will help make that possible.
Children’s Mercy is working towards achieving COG designation as a Phase I/II Clinical Trial Center within our Experimental Therapeutics Program – a prestigious designation held by fewer than 25 children’s hospitals worldwide. Being a Phase I/II Clinical Trial Center will allow Children’s Mercy to be in the forefront of creating and testing new treatments and determining the best methods and best dosages for each child, ultimately increasing the chances of extending each child’s life and offering hope that is otherwise not currently available for these children.
Your support of Red Hot Night will allow Children’s Mercy to take the steps necessary to achieve COG Phase I/II designation and play a significant role in contributing to the advancing knowledge of cancer treatments and in achieving breakthroughs that will improve the treatment for all children battling cancer. Most importantly, you will help insure that each child being treated for cancer will have even more hope for a bright and healthy future.
Hands & Hearts Shines on Valentine's Day!
