5th Annual Young Athlete Conference: Sports Medicine Controversies 

The 5th Annual Young Athlete Conference: Sports Medicine Controversies will be held at the Ritz Charles in Overland Park on May 29, 2015 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  This one-day course is designed for athletic trainers, nurses, physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other healthcare professionals that provide care to student athletes. Continuing education will be offered.  Evidence-based practice continuing education is available for athletic trainers. 


  • Identifying the implications of sudden cardiac death with regard to the pre-participation physical examination
  • Identifying the evidence behind the task force's updates to the pre-participation physical examination
  • Explaining new recommendations for spinal immobilization on the field
  • Describing the effectiveness of different injury prevention equipment
  • Summarizing a screening tool to identify student athletes at risk for suicide
  • Discussing a parent perspective of a child who has committed suicide
  • Discussing the timeline of using open vs. closed-chain exercises post-anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery
  • Explaining the rationalization behind graft selection for ACL surgery
  • Discussing the potential side effects associated with supplement use by student athletes

Breakout sessions will also be included in the conference:

  • Demonstrate proper spinal immobilization
  • Demonstrate return-to-sport functional testing post-op ACL surgery
  • Demonstrate a clinical examination for an ACL injury
