Child Life Specialists are available in the outpatient clinic,
on 4 Henson Tower and the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit as well as
many other areas in the hospital. A Child Life Specialist is
trained to meet the developmental, emotional and psycho-social
needs of AYA patients and their families by advocating for children
in all areas of the hospital. You may see a Child Life Specialist
hanging out with teens. Child Life Specialists aid in pain
management and assist with positive coping skills by providing
age-appropriate teaching about surgery or procedures, providing
support and distraction during procedures, helping AYA patients
adjust to diagnosis, treatment and hospitalization, providing
support for brothers and sisters, and by providing many
opportunities for social contact and peer interaction.
