News and Features Cardiac Surgery Reaches Half-Century Milestone

In 2010, Children’s Mercy Hospital marked its 50th anniversary of performing heart surgeries.

Thomas Holder, MD, joined the medical staff in 1960 as Chief of Surgery and established what would become a long tradition of excellence in cardiac surgery at the hospital. At the time, he was one of the few surgeons in the entire nation to have a formal residency, a fellowship and teaching experience in the newly established specialty of pediatric surgery. Along with Keith Ashcraft, MD, he co-authored the classic Pediatric Surgery. Now in its 5th edition and retitled Ashcraft’s Pediatric Surgery, it continues to be used as a standard textbook in medical schools across the country.
