In 2010, Children’s Mercy Hospital marked its 50th anniversary of performing heart surgeries.
Thomas Holder, MD, joined the medical staff in 1960 as Chief of Surgery and established what would become
a long tradition of excellence in cardiac surgery at the hospital. At the time, he was one of the few surgeons
in the entire nation to have a formal residency, a fellowship and teaching experience in the newly established
specialty of pediatric surgery. Along with Keith Ashcraft, MD, he co-authored the classic Pediatric Surgery.
Now in its 5th edition and retitled Ashcraft’s Pediatric Surgery, it continues to be used as a standard textbook
in medical schools across the country.
