Cardiologists and cardiac surgeons at the Ward Family Heart Center are collaborating with the Center for Pediatric Genomic Medicine to investigate genetic causes of congenital heart disease.
Genomic Research for Heart Disease
Their research includes comparing gene expression in hearts of affected children against that of children with structurally normal cardiac anatomy and function.
Improving Treatment Options
The combination of the Ward Family Heart Center and Genome Center also gives cardiologists and cardiac surgeons the ability to look beyond the genetic causes of heart disease. Investigations are underway to determine if there is anything in a child’s genotype that influences how he/she may respond to a particular therapy, surgery, or drug.
Identifying these characteristics would not only mean being able to tailor treatment strategies for individual patients, but ultimately avoiding costly and unnecessary treatments.
