We are located at:
Children's Mercy Hospital, Hospital Hill, 2401 Gillham Road, Kansas
Our staff includes a comprehensive management team with two
Nurse Managers, Core Charge Nurses, two Unit Based Education
Coordinators, and approxmately 130 employees including Staff Nurses
and Care Assistants.
We have a "sister" unit, 5
Sutherland. 5 Henson and 5 Sutherland share managers and staff;
in fact, most of our staff members spend time working on both
Our nursing unit is supported by:
- A Child Life Specialist
- Respiratory Therapy
- Pharmacy support
- Social Work support
- Chaplain support
- Nutrition support
- Occupational and Physical Therapy
We assign one RN to every three to four patients. Each
care assistant or nurse tech is assigned the care
of approximately seven patients.
Full-time employees on our unit work 3 12-hour shifts each
- 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
- 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.
We also have part-time, PRN, and Weekend Option positions.
We have a charge nurse on each shift, who typically is not
assigned a patient load. Our charge nurses are involved with
managing the day-to-day operations of our unit.
Orientation and Training
Orientees train one-on-one with an assigned preceptor throughout
the orientation process. RN Orientation is typically 10 weeks, but
may be increased or decreased, as needed by the orientee.
Orientation includes both 5 Sutherland and 5 Henson.
During the orientation period, all competencies are verified;
there are routine meetings with the unit-based education
coordinator to discuss progress; and the orientee provides direct
patient care starting with one patient and gradually learning to
coordinate care for a full patient load.
Staff Nurses receive ongoing training, to include:
- 5 Sutherland/5 Henson 101 Courses
- Quarterly staff updates
- Annual competencies
- Unit-specific training
Paid training is available to become a preceptor, improve
leadership skills, obtain PALS certification, and more!
Introductory Staff Nurses
We hire introductory staff nurses. Introductory staff nurses
work with a preceptor for 10 weeks before working
Introductory staff nurses will spend time on both 5 Sutherland
and 5 Henson during orientation, with two weeks of orientation
working the opposite shift utilizing the preceptor as a resource
Advancement from introductory staff nurse to staff nurse occurs
after completing orientation, competencies, and passing NCLEX.
