We assign a team of two to three RNs and one or two CA/NT to each pod of eight patients. Each RN cares for two to three patients without a Care Assistant or four patients with a Care Assistant, depending on census and acuity.

We have a charge nurse on each shift, who typically is not assigned a patient load. Our charge nurses are involved with managing the day-to-day operations of our unit.

We generally have a resource nurse available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday to assist others with procedures, transports, admissions, etc. The Resource Nurse does not usually take a patient assignment unless acuity is very high on the unit.

Full-time employees on our unit work three 12-hour shifts each week:

  • 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
  • 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.

We also have part-time, PRN, and Weekend Option positions.

Orientation and Training

Orientees train one-on-one with an assigned preceptor throughout the orientation process. Orientation is typically 11-weeks, but may be increased or decreased, as needed by the orientee.

During the orientation period, all competencies are verified; there are routine meetings with the unit-based education coordinator to discuss progress; and the orientee provides direct patient care starting with one patient and gradually learning to coordinate care for a full patient load.

Staff Nurses receive ongoing training, to include:

  • Quarterly staff updates
  • Annual competencies
  • Floor-specific training
  • Cardiovascular surgery class
  • Liver transplant class

Paid training is available to become a preceptor, improve leadership skills, attain PALS certification, and more.

Introductory Staff Nurses

We hire introductory staff nurses. Introductory staff nurses work with a preceptor for up to 12 weeks before working independently. Refer to Orientation and Training for details.

Advancement from introductory staff nurse to staff nurse occurs after completing orientation, most competencies, and passing NCLEX.
