The Intensive Care Nursery
(ICN)/Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children's Mercy
Hospitals and Clinics is located on "3 Sutherland," and is a
regional referral center providing Level III infant care, the
highest level of neonatal care.
Our goal is to be the Kansas City area's regional subspecialty
neonatal health referral center, and we are the only ICN in this
region with on-site specialists. We also collaborate with existing
obstetrical/perinatal services to promote optimal regionalization
and care for maternal and fetal disorders.

- Respiratory Distress Syndrome

- Multiple Congenital Anomalies
- Meconium Aspiration

- Diaphragmatic Hernia
- Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn
- Bowel Obstruction
- Necrotizing Enterocolitis
- Neural Tube Defects
We have 60 Level III nursery beds. Our unit features:
- Developmentally designed bed spaces with individually
controlled overhead lighting
- Privacy curtains
- Rocking chairs at each bed
- A private lactation room
- Parent care overnight rooms for discharging medically complex
infants
- And more!
The ICN is a family-centered unit that practices primary
nursing. Parents may visit 24 hours/day. Parents receive ongoing
teaching, including on-unit CPR training. They are also included in
daily patient rounds.
Our patients are pre-term and term newborns.
We work with our large team of neonatologists, neonatal nurse
practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and surgeons.
