Children's Mercy Hospitals and
Clinics has a general surgery medical unit at "4
Sutherland" for the following specialties,
including:
- Cardiology
- Cardiovascular surgery
- Hepatology, including liver failure and liver transplant
It is a 24-bed unit. All patient rooms are private and
configured in a "pod" layout to reduce noise and increase nurse
visibility. It is shaped like a three-leaf clover with eight
beds in each leaf.
Each pod has its own medication, nutrition, storage, linen, and
dirty utility room, as well as a nurses' station for the staff
nurses and care assistants working on that pod.
Patients range in age from neonates to 18 years. We occasionally
treat young adults.
We work with the "Blue Team," one of our general medical teams
composed of residents and attending physicians. We also work with
our subspecialty pediatric medical and surgical teams: CV surgery,
hepatology and liver transplant.
